He still remembers reading the novel to the end and marveling at how creative a work it was. He has asserted that the English novelist reached across the chasm that separated the upper class Catholics from his Jewish world in New York. He was soon having issues with his Jewish world as he strived to embrace the outside world which he found in music, movies and books that appealed to his senses and his mind.Īs a fifteen year old, Chaim Potok read Evelyn Waugh’s “Brideshead Revisited” and was mightily impressed. He documented this in Culture Confrontation in Urban America his very popular essay. While he loved his culture and religion growing up, Potok always felt that there was a larger world outside the Jewish one out there that he needed to experience. Just like many young men raised Orthodox, he attended parochial school such as the Talmudic Academy of Yeshiva College. The Potok patriarch raised his children in the Orthodox Jewish tradition and his brother would ultimately graduate as a rabbi and his two sisters are now married to rabbis. After the Great Depression struck, he changed careers and started selling jewelry. His father had come to the US a decade before the Great Depression and started a stationery selling business. Chaim Potok was a Jewish philosophy, religion and fiction author best known for his debut novel “The Chosen.” The author was born in 1929 to Polish Jewish immigrants Mollie Friedman and Benjamin Max Potok.

In the final chapters, she’s embraced V’s ideology, as well as his Guy Fawkes mask, cloak, and hat, and seems to have found a student of her own. (Even when she blows up Downing Street, she makes it clear what she’s doing well in advance.) In a sense, Evey becomes less of a character as V for Vendetta goes on, and more of a symbol. Ultimately, she comes to embrace V’s aims of dismantling the Norsefire government, though she continues to refrain from killing people to do so. Inspired by the example of Valerie, Evey learns to be strong and protect her integrity. Evey undergoes an enormous change when V, pretending to be a government agent, kidnaps and tortures her. She assists him with some of his plans to attack the Norsefire government, but backs off when she realizes that V murders people in order to further his plans. Initially, Evey finds V charming, and is highly grateful to him for saving her life. Some are powerfully entertaining, others just powerful. My own favorites are chosen on a “gut” level I liked these works because they awakened something in me as a reader, spoke to me about things that were already going on my mind, maybe only subconsciously. What is the nature of the individual self? What is the meaning of “happiness,” or “success,” in the global age? What is the soul, and how do we get one? Why are some people turned off by the structures of contemporary societies, and what alternatives do they have? These are just a few of the many issues Murakami addresses, and they affect us all. Murakami is a Japanese writer but he is also a “global” one, meaning that his works are best read not as expressions of Japanese culture, but as examinations of questions that concern all humanity. His heroes routinely journey into a metaphysical realm-the unconscious, the dreamscape, the land of the dead-to examine directly their memories of people and objects they have lost. His works are built around an almost obsessive urge to explore and understand the inner core of the human identity. Murakami Haruki is world-renowned as a novelist of magical realist fiction. Strecher ranks his favorite of the master's books. Matthew Carl Strecher is the author of three books on Haruki Murakami: Dances with Sheep: The Quest for Identity in the Fiction of Haruki Murakami, Haruki Murakami's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle: A Reader's Guide, and the upcoming The Forbidden Worlds of Haruki Murakami. Du Bois forces together these two lives in order to dramatize their bifurcation: “Few thought of two Johns-for the black folk thought of one John and he was black and the white folk thought of another John, and he was white. Jones kills Henderson, and so leaves town again, for the North. The two lives, already linked by name, town, and racial system (John Jones’s sister Jennie works as a maid in the Judge’s house), intersect one fateful day, when John Jones discovers John Henderson sexually assaulting Jennie in a wood. From the same town, “the other John,” John Henderson, the white, entitled son of Judge Henderson, sails off to Princeton without a thought for his navigation. Years later, he comes home to find himself alienated by his education and limited in opportunity. John Jones, an African-American full of promise, leaves the small town of Altamaha, Georgia, to get an education. One of the most moving chapters in W. E. B. Du Bois’s collection of essays, “ The Souls of Black Folk,” is a fiction, a harrowing hypothesis titled “Of the Coming of John.” It tells the story of two young men bound by the same first name. His clients included Elvis Presley, Howard Hughes, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando, whose son, Christian, was rescued by Armes from kidnappers. He takes credit for rescuing actor Marlon Brando's kidnapped son. Armes, owner of the Investigators, a private detective agency, played an Agent 007 role during his search for the boy. Armes went on to become a International Private Investigator, Chief Deputy Constable for El Paso County, Law Enforcement Instructor for El Paso County, and Director of Security for a number of major manufacturing firms abroad. Armes has been a private investigator for about 70 years, and has garnered plenty of publicity for many high-profile cases.
